Mortify Your Sin

Many believers, even after we receive Jesus foolishly continue to dabble in sin. We consider that to be normal. We don*t recognize how abhorrent that is to our Holy God. He hates sin and He wants us to hate it. There should be obvious before and after differences when we receive Jesus. Before we received Jesus we hated God*s will and after we receive Him we should love it and hate Satan*s will and the will of our flesh. The normal that God wants for His children is that they should flee from sin and kill it. Whenever they sin, the Holy Spirit reproves them of it, (makes they feel guilty about it) they confess it, do all they can to forsake it (they even have His help to do that) and He forgives it.

Leviticus 26:15-16: And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant: 16 I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.

Romans 12:9: Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

Colossians 3:5: Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

Romans 8:13: For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

The word mortify is a slightly different word in the two passages. In the Colossians passage it is this: deaden, (figuratively) to subdue, be dead, mortify. In the Romans passage it is this: to kill (literally or figuratively), become dead, cause to be) put to death, mortify.

God hates sin so much that when He saves us removes it from us as far as the east is from the west and He will prevent any and all sin from entering Heaven. He wants us to choose His will over our own and over the will of Satan. When we lose that battle with our flesh and/or Satan, it is because we have rejected God*s help or doubted or forgotten that we have it.

Psalms 103:12: As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

Revelation 21:27: And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb*s book of life.

Romans 6:1-14: What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
